When Hendrik Verwoerd spoke, white South Africans listened. And when he issued instructions, they obeyed. The Prime Minister of South Africa between 1958 and 1966, Verwoerd gave apartheid its shape and form. Sport, naturally, did not escape his attention. His hand was behind the ban imposed on the golfer, Papwa Sewgolum, from playing in ‘white’ tournaments in South Africa. But it was his announcement on 4 September 1965 that Maoris would not be allowed to tour here with the All Blacks that had the most profound effect on South African sport. Some say it was the real beginning of the slippery slope to isolation….
