At just 1.49m tall, Precious McKenzie hardly looked the part of a weightlifter. But his great technique, total dedication and super strength (he was known as the ‘pocket battleship’) helped make him – kilo for kilo – one of the strongest men in the world. He won four consecutive gold medals at the Commonwealth Games in the 1960s and 1970s, as well as a host of other triumphs. Barred on the grounds of his skin colour from representing South Africa, all McKenzie’s honours were gained in the colours of England and New Zealand.
