YOU wouldn’t feed a baby alcohol, would you?

No mother would, you’d probably say. But you’d be wrong.

Every year in the Western Cape, hundreds of women ply their babies with booze. And they do it while they’re pregnant … when their child cannot say “No!”

The consequences will be heartbreaking.

Children whose mothers consume alcohol during pregnancy are likely to be born with Foetal Alcohol Syndrome (FAS).

FAS’s tiny victims will have brain damage. They will probably have facial abnormalities. They are likely to develop heart, liver and kidney problems. Their growth is likely to be stunted. They will probably develop learning and behavioural problems.

And yet, things could easily have been so very different….

If you’re an expectant mother, the first, great gift of love that you could give your child is to say “No” to alcohol while you’re pregnant.
