FOR me, the Cape Argus Pick n Pay Cycle Tour is a big, big winner on three fronts….

It is a breathtaking race. It’s a unique tourist attraction. And it’s an annual report card of an ongoing drive to instil a love of cycling – and to create opportunities – for youth from some of the Western Cape’s most vulnerable communities.

It’s a combination of pluses that the whole of our province can take credit for.

It turns all 5.26-million of us into winners.

I’ve no doubt that the sprinters and the Kings of the Mountain from all over South Africa and many parts of the world will, as usual, enthrall us as they battle for supremacy over the 109km course, which covers some of the most scenic parts of the Western Province.

My best wishes to all of them.

To those who will be travelling at a less frenetic pace, pedal safely, enjoy the views – and take in plenty of fluids.

To the ‘development’ cyclists who will be participating – and I know that there are clubs in Khayelitsha, Langa, Belhar, Elsies River, Bishop Lavis, Mitchells Plain, Steenberg, Retreat, Wynberg, Ottery, Athlone, Bellville, Atlantis and Paarl, as well as a few farm schools in the Stellenbosch, Grabouw, Hex River and Worcester areas – here’s some advice that always works: watch, listen, learn – and start developing the will to win.
